Pastoral | Junior Prep School | Hurst College

Pastoral

We believe that outstanding pastoral care is essential for a child to flourish.

The absolute best schools not only focus on the development of pupils’ academic ability, physical wellbeing, or creativity – they go deeper still – in nurturing the character and moral values. Not only do we prepare our pupils for life at Hurst, but also for life beyond Hurst, so that they understand the value of kindness and how to enrich the lives of those around them.

In the Junior Prep School our form tutors lead the pastoral care of the pupils and are supported by a Head of Year and our Designated Safeguarding Lead. In addition, we have a Pastoral Intervention Practitioner (PIP) who works with individuals and small groups, as required.

Our core values of Work Hard, Do Good and Engage, are reinforced through assemblies, weekly Hurst 4 Life lessons and Chapel services.

House System

We operate a house system to encourage healthy competition and teamwork. Children are allocated to one of four houses – Howards, Bettridges, Scotts and Lowes – all named after the college’s former eminent academic staff. Throughout the year, there are several inter-house competitions including sporting activities, music events and an inter-house day. Each house also takes on the responsibility of running charity days to raise money for charitable causes.

School Guardians

Year 6 pupils have an opportunity to become one of our School Guardians. They receive specific training to help them look out for and support the younger pupils in the school. This programme enhances our friendly and supportive environment.
