During the Easter holidays, twenty pupils and three staff embarked on the Classics Trip to Sorrento and the beautiful Bay of Naples. Key highlights of the week included a visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum; two towns which fell victim to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. They are now invaluable archaeological sites since they are so well-preserved, with many of the original wall paintings and mosaics still in place. Having learned about Pompeii in their Year 7 Latin lessons, seeing how the inhabitants of Pompeii lived in-person—with their food counters, houses, and marketplaces—brought this Roman culture to life for our pupils.
The classicists enjoyed an action-packed itinerary during their time in Italy, which also saw them descend to the underground Roman forum of the San Lorenzo complex, marvel at the luxury of Villa Oplontis, and enjoy the stunning views from the crater of Mount Vesuvius. By the end of each day, the group were unsurprisingly ready to relax with shopping, pizza, and ice-cream in Sorrento.
