This year marked the first ever digital heat for the UK Space Design Competition. Hurst has an excellent track record in this event, having reached the national finals last year, only for it be cancelled.
The competition involves working with other schools on a space design-based project and this year we were paired with Queen Elizabeth’s School, Barnet. Twelve members of our Lower and Upper Sixth were tasked with designing a space base on Mercury. Our team consisted of Alice G (President), Rudy C, Samuel B, Sam H, Daniel H A, Santiago R G, Jai W, Archie L, Freddie P, Freddie H, Matthew S and James B.
It was a highly intensive and challenging day which began at 09.00, as the team worked solidly under the guidance of project president Alice, until the 17.15 deadline. They then had to deliver their work to a panel of judges and experts.
“ Although the team did not make it into the national finals this year, their presentation was fantastic, demonstrating knowledge far beyond the A-level syllabus. Moving forwards, the team are looking at submitting their work into the video competition, as an alternative route to the finals ” Harrison Minter, Teacher of Physics
