As the end of the summer term came to a close, the Outdoor Education team were finally able to embark on a climbing trip.
The minibus and trailer were packed with Angus M, Mathew S, James M and Orianne G on board, bound for Bakewell, Baslow and Hathersage. Each destination served up limestone and sandstone crags at every turn. On arrival, the team set up camp and prepared their equipment for the first day of climbing.
First up on day one was the renowned escarpment at Stanage with over 300 famous climbs of various grades, with exciting names. Over the next two days, our climbers tackled ledges, overhangs and pinches, gradually working through a variety of climbs. Everyone had a turn at placing the runners, a method of lead climbing that all had practiced indoors throughout winter.
The weather was kind throughout the trip and the team only ventured indoors to an Awesome Walls centre at Stockport and Sheffield for a day. Between self-catered meals prepared at the campsite, fish and chips on the riverbank and a Chinese takeaway served in a pub, the team managed to stay well fuelled.
“ These types of events have been sorely missed by both students and staff, so it was a pleasure to be able to run such a trip. ” Fred Simkins, Director of Outdoor Education
