Cricket forms an integral part of Hurst’s Sports programme, generating success across both boys’ and girls’ teams. Throughout the Summer term and Summer break, the cricket department was very busy, despite virus restrictions.
Girls Cricket
The girls played a total of 105 games during the season, winning 65% of them. The College has also hosted several Softball festivals, designed for beginners at both U10 and U15. Six visiting schools attended the festivals, and it was great to see so many girls participate against each other in a fun, yet competitive environment.
One of the highlights for Mr Reynolds, Head of Girl’s cricket, was the first XI’s success against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), one of the most prestigious clubs in the UK, based at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
Alongside first team successes, the U15 team also had a good season, reaching the U15 School Sports Magazine knockout stages, positioning themselves as one of the top 16 teams nationally.
Individually, some players have shown exceptional talent which should be recognised. Jemima S has been selected to represent Kent U15s as part of their girls’ Performance Squad and Southeast Stars academy, which works in partnership with Kent and Surrey CCC. Daisy G made her first team debut with Sussex CCC during the season and was also selected to participate in the Southern Vipers Regional Development Centre.
Boys Cricket
The boys cricket section has been equally busy, with a number of cup games and matches taking place throughout the Summer term. The major highlight of the season for our Head of Cricket, Mr Anyon, was the 1st XI winning the Langdale trophy by beating local rivals Brighton College in the final. The U15s also made the final, and the U14s qualified for the semi-finals.
Throughout the season, individuals have also made progress with their cricketing careers. Henry R was selected to represent the southeast at the Banbury Festival, whilst Bertie F was selected to represent the southeast in the ECB Super 4s competition, and alongside Aiden D, was selected for Sussex CCC 2nd XI over the summer having impressed in the county age group squads.
Staff Cricket
Two members of staff from the Cricket department were also in action this season, representing the Southern Vipers Womens XI. Miss Schofield and Miss Green were both selected to represent the team in the Charlotte Edwards Cup finals last week at the Ageas Bowl following victory over the Loughborough Lightening at the Incora County Ground in Derby. Their team missed out on a place in the final after a narrow loss by just 18 runs to the Northern Diamonds.
