Upper Sixth student, Rory K, designed and manufactured an interactive information display for Lingfield Park Racecourse in Surrey, as part of his A-level product design coursework.
With several ideas for his project, Rory finally chose a challenge which racecourse personnel had been considering for some time. They wanted an interactive on-site display for visitors keen to learn about the racecourse’s history and be able to touch some key items relevant to horse racing.
Lingfield Park opened in 1890, and initially the course was home to National Hunt racing only. Just four years later, due to its popularity, the Jockey Club agreed for the venue to also include flat racing. Its popularity was in part due to the then Prince of Wales allowing his logo to be used in the course’s marketing and branding. As the first-ever all-weather horse racing course in the UK, Lingfield is set apart from other courses as the only one to host all three race types: flat turf, flat all-weather and National Hunt.
Rory was at Lingfield Park on Good Friday to see his project unveiled, which was very warmly received by his client and enthusiastically engaged with by visitors. He was also interviewed by a Sky Sports Racing presenter about his project.
