On a reasonably warm afternoon in November, the EPQ Presentation afternoon showed parents, pupils and staff just how diverse the interests of our students are. Just after 1pm the sports hall started to fill up with UVI choosing their spot, putting up their board and, in some cases, setting up their props.
John K’s ghostly mannequin really set the scene for his boards explaining his British ‘Bestiary’ of ghost stories. Rosie J’s boards explaining how she went about creating her children’s book on homelessness were absolutely beautiful, the artwork from the book reflected in the boards’ design. And who could walk past Lottie A’s immaculate sketchbook detailing the history of anatomical illustration? The pupils really are so talented.
The artefacts were not the only stars of the show though. Tom D’s considered and sensitive investigation of PTSD in various theatres of war had listeners awed at the quality of his speech. James H also spoke with real clarity and depth of knowledge. Parents who looked round during the subsequent Parent’s Evening came away vastly impressed – not just with their own child’s presentation – but at the scale of the event and the knowledge on show. It really is a highlight of the academic year and a showcase for independent learning.
The final word must go to Will D’s restored 1980s BMW motorbike, brought in for the event. There was not a quiet moment around his stand as everyone gravitated towards it to marvel at his craftsmanship. As Mr Carroll noted, these are not skills that many people know. The fact that he won the top prize for his presentation (voted by LVI, UVI and parents) is a testament to the sheer amount of work he has put into it. He was a worthy winner, although everyone there deserved a commendation for the hard work they put into their projects.
