U14s finish top of their group in Sussex Cup qualifying
On Monday, the U14A hockey girls travelled to Ardingly College to compete in the West Sussex qualifying round of the Sussex Cup. This year, the format has changed with two West Sussex pools and two East Sussex pools when the top two in each will battle it out in the semi-finals to decide who goes through to finals day, which will be hosted at Hurst.
After a strong warm up, the girls prepared to play their first match of the day against Worth. Instantly, the team dominated the ball, moving it up the pitch with ease, and creating plenty of goal scoring opportunities. When the final whistle blew the team had secured a good 2-0 win. Next up were Burgess Hill Girls, and although our team demonstrated skilful hockey to score one goal, they also struggled to convert most of their chances and a late goal from the opposition meant the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The team’s confidence was high as they finished top of their pool regardless of the results that followed. In their semi-final against Seaford there were many strong performances all-round and two well worked goals were enough to put them into the final against Ardingly. After 20 minutes into the final, neither team had converted a goal and the score remained at 0-0 going into penalty strokes. Our goalkeeper, Elsie, made some fantastic saves to help Hurst through to the Sussex Cup Finals Day when they will meet Roedean.
