On the final weekend before half-term, the U15A team maintained tradition by attending the National U15 Rugby Competition at Langley School, Norfolk.
This year’s journey to Langley was very different for the squad, as they unfortunately got stuck in the floods and Malcolm, a bus driver, slept alone in the minibus to keep an eye on all the kit! Despite the previous night’s chaos and a significant lack of sleep, the boys did not let this dampen their spirits; they stuck together and handled the situation maturely.
Langley had some brilliant teams such as Brighton College, Wellington College, RGS Newcastle, Seaford, Tunbridge, and Bedford in attendance, making it a high-quality competition.
Hurst began their campaign on day one with a loss to Wellington College but by only one try! However, the boys took on the feedback and grew from there, winning the rest of their block games in the tournament against teams such as Brighton College, St Joseph’s, Woodhouse Grove, and Dulwich.
The boys managed to get into the final against Wellington College, whom they had previously lost to. Unfortunately, they finished just one goal away from retaining the trophy, but they gave it their all and it was a very competitive and close game for both teams. A very well-deserved second place.
The teamwork, camaraderie, sheer grit and determination contributed to their performance and represented the school so well. A special mention to the captain, Rory G-G, for his work in leading the team and to Jonny S, Finn P, and Jacob J for their development and performances. It was also fantastic to also have U14 players in the team, including a stand-out performance from Zeph F.
The team continues to develop as the U15s are currently unbeaten in block fixtures and the national cup, where they will face RGS Guildford on Thursday 16 November. This match will determine whether they go into the last 16!
“ I am incredibly proud of how the boys played ” Cam Allen, Coach
