Three past pupils, who have established themselves as well regarded cricketers, have achieved great honours this season. George Garton, Tom Haines and Jack Carson who were involved at county level whilst at Hurst are proving excellent role models to current pupils.
George Garton, Sussex CCC
Garton, who left Hurst in 2015, is currently representing Sussex CCC 1st XI as a left arm seemer. Earlier this Summer, he was selected for the England One Day International (ODI) squad in the Royal London ODI series versus Sri Lanka for the first time having been part of England system through the Lions since 2016. Following on from this, Garton spent the Summer representing the Southern Brave squad in a new franchise tournament ‘The Hundred’ a new action-packed 100 ball game. Southern Brave progressed all the way to the final, winning the inaugural men’s championship versus Birmingham Phoenix. Throughout the tournament, Garton took 10 wickets in nine games.
He also played an important role with the Sussex Sharks, who have been progressing through the Vitality T20 Blast competition. The squad have qualified for finals day for the first time since 2018, with a five wicket win over Yorkshire CCC.
To top off his extensive achievement list for the year, Garton was also signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He will join the Indian franchise after his Sussex Sharks appearance at the Vitality T20 Blast finals next week.
Tom Haines, Sussex CCC
Tom left Hurst in 2017, and has recently been named Sussex captain for the last part of the season having played 28 matches since his first-class debut aged 17. The season started well for Haines, receiving and signing a multi-year contract extension with Sussex CCC as an opening batter – he is currently ranked as the fourth highest run scorer in the county. Sussex CCC believe as a new captain he will be able to develop alongside the young, homegrown players that will form the core of their 50-over and championship sides in the coming years, a huge achievement for a 22-year-old. To top off Haines’ success this season, he has scored 1000 runs in the championship so far, at an average of more than 50.
Jack Carson, Sussex CCC
Carson left Hurst in 2019, and quickly established himself as one of Sussex’s leading championship bowlers, after his breakthrough season last year. He is one of the stars of the championship season so far, having been selected as part of the 14-man county squad which took on India at the Emirates Riverside in a three-day match in July, as part of India’s warm up schedule in preparation for their LV= Insurance test series campaign.
Jack has been recognised for his consistent red-ball performances since his first Sussex debut in 2020. To date, he has taken 49 wickets at an average of 25.67. His wickets in the LV= Insurance County championship make him Sussex’s leading wicket taker and the leading England qualified spinner in the competition. A hugely impressive season so far for the 20-year-old.
