This week saw the Year 8 performance of Seussical The Musical; what a success! The cast, production team, and audience were immersed in the incredible world of Dr. Seuss, finding themselves transported between worlds—from the Jungle of Nool, to Circus McGurkus.
The theme for the Senior Prep School productions this year is ‘imagination’. With Seussical, we really encouraged the pupils to get creative with their characters, and enjoy the freedom to delve more deeply into these timeless stories. Dr. Seuss’s infamous characters have inspired generations of children, and in a world where social media risks becoming all-consuming amongst the younger generation, it is important to keep these iconic, inspiring stories alive.
The writers of Seussical, Tony-winning Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, have brought a whole range of Dr. Seuss’s characters alive: from Horton the Elephant and The Cat in The Hat, to Mayzie Le Bird, Gertrude McFuzz, and Jojo. Flaherty’s composition encompasses many different musical genres: jazz, Broadway, lullaby, Motown, gospel, and Latin pop.
The cast are lucky to have been led by such a fantastic direction team, as well as theatre production team. We are already looking forward to our next Senior Prep production in May, which will see Year 7 take to their stage in a rendition of Roald Dahl’s James and The Giant Peach.
