Last Wednesday, 28 members of the Fifth Form CCF Army Section made their way to Longmoor Camp in Hampshire to test their skills on the shooting range for their service day activity.
The purpose of this service day is to contribute to the service section of their Duke of Edinburgh award and to gain the basic or advanced shooting qualification. The weather outlook was not a pleasant one but as many of the cadets said on the day “if it ain’t raining, it ain’t training!”.
The first firers of the day had the best of the weather and included in that detail was Hurst Cadet C Barnard who became the best shot of the day, earning a first-class Marksman badge in tricky conditions. The shoot consisted of firing at targets from 100 – 200 metres away, as well as snap and rapid fire, to test the cadets on what they had learnt from the Skill at Arms sessions in the lead up to the day. Weapon handling was to a very high standard and all safety staff noted the professionalism and maturity of our cadets on the firing point when dealing with live round.
“ A successful day overall with some good quality shooting and a good effort all-round from many first-time shooters – and even the rain did not dampen their spirits! ” Sam Amos, CCF Contingent Commander
