On 28 February, the Classics department took 21 pupils from Year 7 to Lower Sixth to Roedean for the Sussex Schools Classical Reading competition. Entrants dressed up in Roman costumes and recited a Latin story to an audience, either as solo or group performances.
Hurst pupils enjoyed showcasing their Latin pronunciation, conveying the excitement and emotion of the narrative, and supporting their teammates. All participants embraced the challenge of public speaking and delivered dramatic, confident performances.
Congratulations go to Esther C who was highly commended for the Year 9 prize and Georgie F who was highly commended in Year 10. Oliver M in Lower Sixth impressed judges and won the new Classical Civilisation category which involved students delivering a soliloquy translated into English from one of the most famous Greek tragedies that have survived, Oedipus Tyrannus.
The students celebrated with a well-deserved trip to Mcdonald’s afterward.
“ Really well done to everyone who participated. We cannot wait for our return to Roedean next year! ” Clementine Faulkner, Head of Classics
