Our Lower Sixth English students had the pleasure of welcoming Tom Davey, founder of Bright Torches, for an in-depth workshop centered around Shakespeare’s renowned play Hamlet. Bright Torches organise workshops in schools across the country working with pupils of all ages, with an aim to inspire and encourage a more active engagement in the world of literature and spoken literacy.
Through a range of drama-based activities, the Lower Sixth explored the play in an entirely different way to their studies in the English classroom. Performing in pairs, they experimented with movement and tone of voice, developing new and interesting dimensions to Hamlet’s text. Tom—himself a RADA-trained actor and former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company—shared insights from his time on the stage, and encouraged the students to imagine themselves as performers back in Shakespeare’s day.
