The combined year 5 and 6 teams were looking forward to taking part in the IAPS competition held at Hurst. The girls were playing “BEE” netball which had a slightly different format being 5 a side and with players having to rotate positions every half game.
The girls started well with a 3-1 win vs Brambletye and then followed up with an exciting 3-3 draw with Hazelwood. The girls came out of the blocks firing to take a win vs Windlesham. Next up was a tough game vs Brighton College – we had quite a bit of possession but unfortunately could not convert at the rate Brighton could and lost the game 5-1.
The girls were thrilled to finish 2nd in our group and progressed through to the cup competition. We were due to play Sutton Valence in the quarter-final who had one of their group after not losing all morning. The first half was end to end with both teams playing Somme good netball however great defending on both parts meant we went into halftime 2-1 down. The girls dig deep in the second half and quickly got back to drawing the game. With 30 seconds to go a fantastic shot by Olivia Ward saw us go on to win the game 4-3.
Next up was a semi-final, a win here would mean not only a place in the final but also qualification for National Finals. We knew it would be a tough game against Aberdour school which has been playing some great netball all day. The girls were left sleeping in the first half and Aberdour was 7-0 up. We settled into the second half and won that half 3-1 meaning we missed out on a place in the final.
After the initial disappointment, the team was determined to reverse the result against Brighton college in the group game to try and claim a bronze medal. Some slick passing and great shooting saw the girls take the win 5-2.
“ An amazing effort by the whole squad who exceeded both our and their expectations in their first time playing BEE netball. ” Ellen Franks, Head of Netball
