On Monday 15th January, beautiful melodies were in abundance with not only one, but two Winter Concerts taking place. This was an excellent opportunity for our young musicians within their various ensembles to showcase what they had been working on so far this academic year. These concerts took place in the Music School Hall, with friends, families, teachers, and tutors invited to show their support.
The Junior and Senior Prep Schools performed in the first concert at 4:30pm. This concert featured a wide variety of music, from Disney’s When You Wish Upon A Star, performed by Simply Strings, to the original music of Improv group, who created and formed their own song to perform! The Year 4-6 Vibrant Voices choir performed When I Grow Up from Matilda the Musical, whilst the Prep School Orchestra performed a lovely arrangement of the well-known Walking in the Air – a winter classic. Our youngest performers came from the Year 2 Tutti Flutti group, some of whom had only started playing this year, so it was a great accomplishment to be able to stand up on that stage and be brave enough to perform in front of an audience. The concert also featured wonderful performances by Rockin’ Recorders, Years 3&4 Tutti Flutti, Flute Juice, and Prep School Jazz Band.
Later that evening at 7pm, it was the Senior School’s turn to perform their own Winter Concert. This began with an outstanding performance by the Senior Orchestra of Kenneth Leighton’s Intrada and March Finale from Dance Suite No.2. A real highlight of the concert was The Show Choir, with a huge number of performers participating, featuring beautiful harmonies and showcasing the wonderful vocals of individuals through solo parts. The Senior School Jazz Band, who performed the music of Count Basie, Mike Lewis, and George Gerswhin, ended the concert on a high, performing with great energy and enthusiasm. Further exceptional performances included Shell Flute Cocktail, College Brass, Fifth Form Flutette, The String Ensemble, and Lower Sixth Flutissimo.
Overall, these concerts showcased the impressive variety of ensembles in the Music department. From our youngest Tutti Flutti performers to our Upper Sixth musicians who experienced their final Winter Concert, it was great to see so many students enjoy performing and supporting their peers’ performances. Well done to everyone who performed, and many thanks to those who attended the performances and provided such a supportive atmosphere for the students.
